You do not need to know how to pose; with more than eighteen years behind the camera, we guide you gently with natural, flattering direction, so the session feels like time with a friend who happens to have a camera. What to wear. Coordinate, don’t match. Choose a palette of two or three complementary colours across the group rather than everyone in the same outfit — soft neutrals, earthy tones and muted shades flatter every skin tone. Texture and layers photograph beautifully: knits, denim, linen, a jacket over a simple top. Avoid large logos, bold graphics, neon colours and busy patterns, which pull the eye away from faces. Most importantly, wear something you feel good in — confidence is the best thing you can bring to a session.

Families love the Chestermere lakefront and the town’s parks for golden-hour sessions; Calgary offers urban texture — historic streets, river pathways, modern architecture — for headshots, couples and editorial-style portraits. Timing and light. The most flattering light happens in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset — the famous golden hour — so most outdoor sessions are scheduled for early morning or evening. Midday sun is harsh, which is why we plan around it rather than fighting it. For maternity sessions we usually recommend the seventh or eighth month; for little ones, we schedule around nap times so everyone arrives at their best.
What to bring. Bring two or three outfit options if you would like a change during the session — we will help you choose what works best on the day. Meaningful props are welcome: a family heirloom, your guitar, your dog. For children, a favourite snack and a comfort toy work small miracles, and a quick touch-up kit (powder, lip balm, a brush) keeps everyone camera-ready. Arrive a few minutes early, take a breath, and leave the rest to us.

Most sessions run between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the type. Mini sessions and headshots are usually about 30 minutes — efficient and focused — while full family, maternity and couples sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, giving us time for outfit changes, different spots, and the unhurried moments where the best photographs happen. We never watch the clock at the expense of the result.
Please do — two or three options are ideal for family and maternity sessions, and we will help you decide what works best once we see the light and the location. Outfit changes add variety to your gallery and give the session a natural rhythm: we typically start with your favourite look, then switch partway through. Just arrive with your first outfit on and the rest on hangers.
Then we photograph them exactly as they are — and it is almost always wonderful. Children are not expected to sit still and smile on command; we work playfully, follow their energy, and capture the real expressions you will treasure most. Snacks, a comfort toy and a little patience go a long way, and with eighteen years of experience photographing families, very few things surprise us. If a little one truly needs a break, we take one — the session bends to your child, never the other way around.
